On Tuesday, August 17th, at approximately 12:20pm the Carolina Latinx Center prepared to host the inaugural Churros y Chisme program of the school year. The goal was to gather some students before the first day of classes and talk about their excitement and nerves about beginning the new school year and enjoy some delicious churros from our friends at Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews.

What happened was even better than anything we could have imagined! We had some students beginning to trickle in and then one student said, there’s a crowd waiting at the door. We checked our main door, and back door and didn’t see anyone. Then we checked the main door to Abernethy Hall. A group of over 50 students was eagerly waiting at the doors and more were coming! Our small program grew from our anticipated 40 to well over 150 attendees! At this point, we adjusted and turned the program into an opportunity for students to mix and mingle with one another.

The Carolina Latinx Center is so grateful to all our visitors and we hope to continue to offer opportunities for our community to connect with one another, especially when treats are involved! To better fit our growing population, we are hosting our next Churros y Chisme on September 21st, from 12:30-1:30 pm at Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews! Keep an eye out for promotions about that event as it gets closer but go ahead and mark your calendar to join us! Hope to see you then.

Churros y Chisme is the Carolina Latinx Center’s monthly dialogue series that is meant to encourage real talk among our student, staff, faculty, and community members. It is hosted on the third Tuesday of each month during the lunch hour of 12:30-1:30 pm. Come as you are and bring a friend to join our discussion!
