What is your role at Carolina?

I am the Assistant Director of Student Access, Success, and Engagement in the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Prior to that I was the Assistant Director of The Graduate School’s Diversity and Student Success program.

What does “Vivir Mi Vida” mean to you?

“Vivir Mi Vida” is a phrase that reminds me to live fully and authentically. I live my life according to the morals and values that are important to me. I build relationships with people who support me in this effort and help hold me accountable.

How has being at Carolina impacted you?

I attended Carolina for my undergraduate degree. After a few years of working in K-12 education, I returned to be a staff member. Being at Carolina as an undergraduate helped me build close friendships and an extensive network. Now, as a staff member, I have continued to build my network across campus and in the local community. UNC is where I began my career as a student affairs professional and working here has been critical in developing my personal leadership style.

What is your hidden talent?

My hidden talent is that I am able to recall people very well! I will often run into people across campus and tell them with remarkable detail where I met them and in which context.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Advice I would give to my younger self is to negotiate more and get comfortable with saying “no”. Whether this is in personal relationships or your career, it is important to know your worth, know how to advocate for yourself, and know what your boundaries are. If something doesn’t serve you, it is okay to move forward in a different direction.
