It’s time to get excited for this upcoming Latinx Heritage Month! Hi! I’m Gabrielly Nolasco, and I have the privilege of serving as the Latinx Heritage Month Ambassador, and as the chair of the Latinx Heritage Month Committee.

Beginning September 15th, we have scheduled several in-person activities to celebrate the cultures and accomplishments of our Latinx community.

Our theme for this year’s celebration is “Vivir Mi Vida,” which translates to “living my life.” In these past few years, our world has completely changed because of COVID-19. This has become our new normal but instead of letting this hold us back, we want to focus on the present and authentically live our lives to the best ability. To just vivir my vida in the best way we know how.

For our annual Keynote Address, we will have our keynote speaker, Laurie Hernandez, who at the age of 16 became the first Latina to make it to the U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team in 30 years. She also won an individual silver medal on the balance beam. After the Olympics, she appeared on the television show, Dancing with the Stars. Today, Laurie is a student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She will speak about her upbrings and what led her to become the first Latina to make it to the U.S Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team in 30 years.

For this year’s Latinx Heritage Month, events consist of both departments and student organizations hosting professional workshops, group discussions, movie nights, makeup tutorials, and capturing stories for Family Weekend. We will also have our annual dinner at Top of Lenoir where students will get the opportunity to eat authentic Latinx food and dance away to Latinx music.

So, get ready! This year is filled with fun and memorable events you do not want to miss. We hope to see you there!
